Well, I tried. Couldn’t find a suicidal axis. Lots of whitetails, but they’re a no-no for a few more months. But it sure was awesome to get out there! It’s been way too long.

Phil – Do the Axis run wild out there and are they open all year like hogs?

David, in short, yes and yes.

I think the drought has taken a toll, but when I first started coming out here to hunt it wasn’t unusual to see more axis deer than whitetails. It’s a mixed blessing, of course, since any time you have an inundation of non-native species they’re going to compete with the natives. But as far as deer, it’s pretty obvious that the axis population hasn’t done any damage to the whitetails.

For non-residents to hunt axis (or feral hogs), all it requires is a regular hunting license. You can get a short-term license for about $45.

The best hunting for axis is still on high fence ranches, or on large properties that can consistently hold the herd with feeders and water. Free ranging axis seem to wander pretty widely, and from what I’ve seen so far, it’s a “here one day, gone the next” proposition.
