Hunting Trip Update

May 21, 2012

Well, seems like only yesterday I was in the sweltering Hill Country heat, and now I’m whisked away to the cold, gloom of a rainy Spokane morning.  Oh, well, I guess it was only yesterday…

Things are really hopping with the day job right now, so not a lot of time for updates and posts.  I did want to share a little about last week’s short hunts.  I got a ton of video and a few good photos, but they’re all back in Texas at the Hillside Manor, so all I have is this rough photo of my limited success.

He’s not a bad boar, but since we were hunting axis and fallow deer, he’s not exactly the prize I was planning for.  Unfortunately, I couldn’t seem to get an axis doe in front of my rifle.  I had an opportunity at a beautiful axis buck, but I didn’t want to pay the tab for that one… this was, after all, a meat hunt.

My little brother did get an axis doe, and while he was really hoping to carry two of them back to his freezer in NC, he was happy to take the majority of my hog with him as a consolation prize.

All in all, a success, even if the freezer is still a little low.  There’ll be more hunts, and I’ll have more time to enjoy them.

Where were you hunting at Philip?

  2. Phillip on May 21st, 2012 18:58

Hunting near Leakey, Texas with my friend Shane (Border Bandit Outfitters).

Also got out near Carta Valley on a beautiful ranch (Rancho Cueva).

Oh, and sorry for the low-quality, cellphone picture, but I shot this guy in the head… twice. He wasn’t particularly photogenic after that.

Hey Phil, sorry for the long lapse in communication – I’ve been following your blog and wanted to first say congratulations on the move down to Texas! You’re never wrong when you follow your heart. Sorry you didn’t connect on the Axis does – were you hunting the same properties with Shane that we did last year? I was really itching to come down this year but I’m still working off my elk and two mule deer. I am very light on pork however – just need the time to book a hog hunt. Keep well and thanks for keeping us updated on what’s happening with yourself.

Good to hear from ya, Mike. Actually was thinking about dropping you guys a line here in the near future.

For the hunts, I shot the hog on one of the properties you guys hunted last year. The other hunt was on a different place, but definitely somewhere I’d like to hunt again. I think ya’ll might like it too.

I’ve got feelers out to Tejon Ranch to see what their future holds. If they open up hog hunts again (at a reasonable price), the first few hunts should be epic!

Phil, please stay in touch – if you’re thinking about a Tejon hunt – there’s a bunch of guys here who would be up for it. I also might be able to twist a couple of arms to organize a Texas hog hunt – is it a problem in organizing a hog hunt in the area you’re now living?

    Hey, Mike.

I’ve got a couple of calls into Tejon, but not getting any responses (not a surprise). As of now, the website says that hunting operations are still suspended “for a couple of months”. I know there are some serious changes in the back office, and I have no idea how they may pan out. It’s a shame, because that has always been one of my favorite places in California, and definitely one of the best hog hunts you will ever experience (even though you guys didn’t come out all that well on our last trip).

As far as a hunt around here, I’m actually pretty close to the places we hunted last time and Shane seems to have a little bandwidth right now. During deer season, he’s totally booked. There are probably a few other places, but I’d like to get to know them before I recommend them to my friends. The quality of a hunt can vary a lot down here.

Thanks Phil, Fabio and I travel frequently to Texas (or certainly we have good excuses to). It would be easy enough to extend any of the trips to include hog chasing. Mike

If ya’ll are going to be “in the neighborhood” (Texas is a HUGE state), shoot me a line and I can try to get something going. I’m still back and forth to CA for a couple more months, and of course I have work travel on an irregular schedule, but even if I can’t join you, I’d be more than happy to set something up.

Thanks for the note, Deer Stalker! He was a decent boar… not the largest in body, but he had some really nice tusks.
